Bonus Pastor Catholic College is a five-form secondary school
occupying two separate sites on the Winlaton and Churchdown
campuses. The buildings were occupied by approximately 750 pupils
in September 2012 and the landscaping works were completed in the
Spring of 2013.
The existing school was fully operational during the
construction works and as a result the new school buildings were
constructed closer to the local amenity Green Chain Walk. In
response to this, the external envelope concept was developed to
use colours associated with the woodland and reflect the changing
nature of those colours through the seasons, whilst providing a
contemporary colour palette for the school.
Both buildings are designed as a series of interlocking spaces,
rather than rooms off corridors, with break-out and circulation
spaces providing opportunities for informal learning and display.
Glimpses from one space to another both allow for practical
supervision and create a sense of journey through the interlocking
Equally important to the quality of the design are those
elements not so obvious at first glance. Solar panels, green and
brown roofs, thermal efficiency, predominantly natural ventilation
and landscaping, designed to encourage bio-diversity, all
contribute to providing a sustainable design.
