Deptford Green awarded Best Education Building

Deptford Green awarded Best Education Building

Nov 19, 2013

The WGI designed Deptford Green School has been recognised as the Best Education Building at the Local Authority Building Control's National Building Excellence Awards.

Deptford Green School, which opened in September 2012, was part of the third phase of the Lewisham BSF programme. The new building designed by Watkins Gray International LLP and built by Costain accommodates 1,300 pupils and unites the existing lower and upper schools previously occupying separate sites.

Having previously won the regional award for London, Deptford Green School was nominated for the national finals.  At last week's LABC award reception, representatives from Lewisham Building Control, Costain and WGI accepted the award for Best Education Building in the UK.

The Building Excellence Awards showcase how design teams have dealt with technical issues and difficult sites. They highlight innovative and creative solutions and building control professionalism that leads to safe, sustainable and high quality construction projects.

Based on the criteria LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said the following about Deptford Green: "As well as providing a sound learning environment the buildings are energy efficient and provide natural ventilation and light, exceeding the sustainability targets set out at the start of the project."

"The challenges the project team faced in delivering these new school buildings were bringing all the school's students together on a single site, making sure the new buildings were fully accessible for disabled people and including various sustainable technologies to meet sustainability targets".

Located in New Cross (South East London), the project forms part of an extensive regeneration initiative for the area. With the construction of the new school a more substantial and appropriately scaled backdrop to the recently revamped Fordham Park has been created.  The school was conceived as a public building that feels open and interacts with the wider community.
