McMullen Barracks

The Sea Mounting Centre (SMC) in Marchwood is the main base for deployment of armed forces and vehicles overseas. When the Defence Infrastructure Organisation invited Balfour Beatty to tender for the centre's design and redevelopment, the contractor selected WGI as architect.
Accommodation on the existing base was required to be increased adjacent to existing accommodation without disruption to operations - with the new buildings linked around a new central hub and social centre. Also required was additional senior officer accommodation linked to the existing mess building, which was to remain open at all times.
Following stakeholder testing and sign off, WGI designed and developed an offsite volumetric solution, delivered to site complete with furniture and linen. This enabled delivery ahead of programme with early occupation and minimal impact on site security and operation, as well as reduced CO2 footprint. The £14 million scheme also addressed sensitive SSSI planning and conservation issues including flood plain requirements.
