Birmingham PPP2

Birmingham Schools PPP2 was a complex, PFI-procured project of new and replacement schools comprising nine new primary schools, two secondary schools and a children's centre. WGI successfully bid for the £56 million project with Transform Schools, Balfour Beatty Construction's consortium. The initial brief called for retention and extension/adaptation of most of the existing buildings, carried out (with one exception) whilst the schools remained in full operation.
WGI's design solution was to utilise a classroom module that allowed for significant repetition across all the primary school projects. This led to significant programme-wide economic benefits and actually allowed for the replacement of all schools with complete new buildings. The result enabled a high degree of flexibility to be adopted by all new schools both in terms of layout and education delivery. All designs adopted a clear and defined rationale of internal circulation, resulting in a hierarchy of movement around the buildings, developed to enable the spaces between classrooms to become an integral part of the learning experience.
